>ARTIST STATEMENT<

AS AN ARTIST, I MAKE ARTIFACTS. THESE PIECES ARE SOUVENIRS, BROUGHT BACK FROM EXPLORATIONS INTO PERSONAL INTROSPECTION. I OFFER THESE ARTIFACTS IN THE HOPE THAT THEY MAY BE OF USE TO THE VIEWER FOR WHATEVER INTEREST THAT VIEWER BRINGS TO THE WORK.

AS THE ARTIST, I HAVE A SINGULAR RESPONSIBILITY TO AND RELATIONSHIP WITH MY WORK EXCLUSIVELY. BETWEEN ARTIST AND VIEWER, THE ARTWORK ITSELF OBSTRUCTS DIRECT COMMUNICATION. THIS HAS BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE IMPLICATIONS. THE WORK SHOULD BE CAPABLE OF STANDING ON ITS OWN, WITHOUT ANY PERSONAL CONTEXT.

NOT EVERYONE WHO VIEWS MY WORK FINDS IT OF INTEREST AND I ACCEPT THIS WITHOUT DISAGREEMENT. I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT MY WORK ISN’T FOR EVERYONE. WHILE SOME ARTISTS SEEK A KIND OF UNIVERSAL EXPRESSION, THOSE THAT I APPRECIATE MOST SEEK IT THROUGH DOGGEDLY PERSONAL EXPLORATION. ART SHOULD BE SELF-INDULGENT. THAT SAID, WHO I AM WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF MY WORK SHOULDN’T MEAN MUCH OF ANYTHING TO YOU. RATHER, IF MY WORK HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER YOU ABOUT YOURSELF, THEN I AM CLOSER TO SERVING MY PURPOSE AS AN ARTIST. AT LEAST AS I SEE THE ROLE. AS AN ARTIST, I AM MERELY A RECEIVER AND INTERPRETER.

THERE IS NO SINGULAR, “CORRECT” INTERPRETATION OF MY WORK. I HAVE MINE AND I TYPICALLY LEARN MORE FROM MY PIECES THAN I HAVE TO IMPART ABOUT THEM. WHAT THIS WORK MEANS TO YOU IS AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT IT MEANS TO ME.

IF NOTHING ELSE, PLEASE ACCEPT MY GRATITUDE FOR LOOKING AT MY WORK. I HOPE IT HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER YOU. YOUR INTEREST IN IT, HOWEVER DEEP, GIVES IT PURPOSE. THANK YOU.
